The GSU choir has a rich heritage, having its origin approximately in 1947. Former directors included Mignon Cabell, Mildred Sowande, and L.L. Lusk. It would become the first music ensemble to be established at Grambling. The choir gained the most notoriety under the direction of Composer / Conductor Robert E. Williams, who served as director of the choir from 1960 -1986. Other more recent directors who have continued the GSU choir legacy includes McCoy Ransom Jr. (1986), Terry Alexander (1988), Cheryl Clansy (1989-1998), Patricia Britton (1998-2001), Marcus J. Rhodes (2001-2009), and the present choral conductor Edryn J. Coleman has conducted since 2009.
