Academic traditions are a hallmark of higher education institutions. Regalia worn at commencement and other formal events dates back to medieval European universities. The president’s regalia and university mace are all physical symbols of the institution.
Presidential Regalia
The president’s gown is black with four black velvet bars on the sleeves complete with gold cording. Presidents are the only academics entitled to wear the fourth bar. Two black velvet panels are trimmed with gold cording and embroidered on each side with the university seal. The regalia is completed by a black velvet tam with a gold tassel.
University Mace
The University Mace is a special symbolic ceremonial staff of the University that is commonly emboldened with historical facts and significant dates in the life of the University and/or education and learning in general. Its presence denotes that a faculty-sanctioned assembly is in session. The mace is always found at the head of the academic procession.Located at Grambling State University, the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center is a premier multi-purpose arena named in honor of legendary coach Fredrick C. Hobdy.
