Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Establishes Award to Honor Leadership

Steven Wilson, Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Joseph B. Johnson Leadership Award WinnerGRAMBLING, La. – August 18, 2020 – The Alumni of the Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. announced today that it has conferred its highest award, the Joseph B. Johnson Leadership Award, to Steven Wilson.

Wilson, a native of Winnfield, LA, is a spring 2018 initiate into the Gamma Psi Chapter and is the current Grambling State University Student Government Association president.

While serving as SGA president, Wilson has:

  • Worked with Advancement Office and Graduate SGA President on new Whataburger Tiger Resource Center and student pantry auxiliary,
  • Been instrumental in getting on-campus mobile charging stations,
  • Worked to get a mobile application for student safety,
  • Advocated for students on-campus and at state level,
  • Increased student engagement for Home Depot Retool-Your-School Challenge.

“Grambling State provides opportunities for students like Steven Wilson to develop leadership skills that will serve them throughout their lives,” President Rick Gallot, who is also a Kappa Alpha Psi brother. “These opportunities go well beyond the classroom into the community and make a real difference in our world.”

The award was established this year by the Alumni of the Gamma Psi Chapter in conjunction with the $100,000 Dr. Joseph B. Johnson Endowed Professorship. It is given at the discretion of the Gamma Psi Alumni Steering Committee to the undergraduate brother who has represented the chapter, community, and university well in a leadership capacity. It includes a $500 cash award.

The late Dr. Joseph B. Johnson was a spring 1955 initiate of the Gamma Psi Chapter and president of Grambling State from 1977 until 1991. Dr. Johnson’s presidential tenure saw many university achievements, most notably stabilization of the university’s financial standing and a substantial enrollment increase.
