The Grambling State University Visual & Performing Arts Department presents “Dreamgirls”

April 3 @ 7:00 pm - April 6 @ 9:00 pm

$5.00 – $12

The Grambling State University Visual & Performing Arts Department will be showcasing “Dreamgirls”.

Set in the 1960s and 1970s, Dreamgirls follows the rise of a talented girl group, The Dreams, from obscurity to superstardom. Originally called The Dreamettes, the trio—Effie, Deena, and Lorrell—start as backup singers for gospel star Jimmy Early. Under the manipulative management of Curtis Taylor, the group faces internal struggles and betrayal, as Effie is replaced by Deena as lead singer, leading to Effie’s heartbreaking departure.

In Act II, Effie rebuilds her career with the help of her old friend Marty, while The Dreams continue their rise but face growing tensions. Curtis’ controlling ways alienate Deena, who eventually leaves him to pursue her own dreams. Effie finds success with a hit single, and after years of estrangement, she reconciles with her brother C.C. and Deena. The story concludes with The Dreams’ farewell concert, where Effie is invited back for a moving final performance, symbolizing healing and unity.

At its core, Dreamgirls explores ambition, loyalty, and the cost of fame, set against the backdrop of the evolving music industry.
